About the
Speaker
Carl Seaton has directed
and produced numerous award-winning films.
Now, he is charging in to episodic directing.
Carl directed two episodes for John Singleton’s
show "Rebel," the CW shows, "The
Originals" and "Dynasty,"
two episodes of Dick Wolf’s drama,
"Chicago PD," and Showtime Networks,
"The Chi," just to name a few!
Carl has also directed network television
shows on CBS, NBC, BET. Up next for Carl
is directing on “Snowfall,”
on the FX Networks.
Born in Chicago, Carl grew up with a strong
affinity for movies and television shows.
The meteoric rise of the VCR turned his
affinity for movies in to a full-blown addiction.
Carl’s addiction led him to Columbia
College Film School where he studied the
crafts of Directing and Screenwriting. The
creative environment at Columbia allowed
Carl to flourish where he graduated with
Honors.
Carl’s first feature film, One
Week, was a drama about a heterosexual
man that has to wait a week for the results
of an HIV test as he prepares for his wedding.
The ultra-low budget film screened all over
the world in prestigious festivals like
the Toronto International Film Festival,
and Fespaco. One Week also garnered awards
at several film festivals including the
American Black Film Festival, Urbanworld,
and the Chicago International Film Festival.
One Week went on to obtain
theatrical distribution and obtained the
highest per screen average of any film in
release its opening weekend. The film also
became a centerpiece for discussion regarding
HIV in the African American community. The
Delta Sigma Theta sorority embraced the
film and bestowed Carl with the Lillian
Benbow Award for Community Outreach. Following
the success of One Week,
Carl co-wrote a screenplay, Step in the
Name of Love, which was acquired by MGM.
Carl’s next work was the short film,
Karim, a highly stylized
12-minute short film done with no dialogue
that places a spotlight on the traumatic
affects of inner city violence. Inspired
by the senseless murders happening in Chicago,
the film won an audience award at the Hollyshorts
Film Festival as well as the San Francisco
Black Film Festival before it received a
global distribution deal with ShortsTV.
This short film was quickly followed by
another short film, Open, a stylishly seductive
con that was done in conjunction with Snag
Films.
In 2016, Carl premiered his latest film,
a Movie of the Week for the TV One Network,
Bad Dad Rehab, starring Malik Yoba,
the film is about four men that go to a
rehab program that helps them become better
fathers. The film garnered Carl a NAACP
Image Award nomination. Carl Seaton is in
demand and on the rise in 2019 and beyond.
